As the world gathered in Riyadh for the 11th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, one message rings unmistakably clear: peace has fallen off the global priority list and we simply cannot afford that any longer.

Speaking ahead of the Forum, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for UNAOC, issued a powerful call to young people everywhere… to reclaim peace. Not as a slogan, not as a wish, but as a global, lived, and shared priority. At The Peace Innovation Initiative, we believe this moment demands more than reflection; it demands action, creative, courageous, youth-led action that places peace back at the center of global decision-making.

A World More Connected… And More Divided

When the Alliance of Civilizations was created in 2005, the world was unipolar. Today, it is undeniably multipolar, shaped by emerging voices across the Arab world, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This complexity is not a weakness but an incredible opportunity if only we choose dialogue over division.

Moratinos reminds us that dialogue is not passive, it is a discipline, a practice, and a commitment to listening even when the world feels loud with fear, polarization, and hate. For hate is at work, amplified by algorithms, accelerated by social media, and weaponized in virtual spaces where young people now spend much of their lives. Hate begins with words, but it ends in exclusion, violence, and war. Peace innovation means interrupting that cycle.

Technology Needs A Moral Compass

Artificial intelligence will shape the future, that is not in question whatsoever. The real question is whether it will serve humanity or erode us all. “A machine has no concern for ethics,” Moratinos warned. But humans do, which is why we insist on human-centered innovation, technology guided by values, accountability, and compassion. AI must strengthen dialogue, not deepen division. It must protect dignity, not replace responsibility. For innovation without ethics is not progress… only peril.

Security Without Peace Is An Illusion

The world talks endlessly about security, yet we constantly forget the foundation it rests upon… peace. There is no security without peace, no climate solution without humanity, and no future worth saving if we continue to destroy one another. So you see, peace is not idealism but our opportunity into a better future, and this is the moment in which our global youth are needed most. Only this generation can decide whether the 21st century will be the last century defined by war.
