WHO WE ARE
The Peace Innovation Initiative
The Peace Innovation Initiative is the new accelerator for peace practice.
Driven by our bold commitment and values, we are collectively amplifying and funding revolutionary thinkers and local partners who are invested in sustainable impact.
Founded through the vision and leadership of Barbara Winston and our founding partner, the UN-mandated University for Peace, PII was first presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as part of the University for Peace (UPEACE) report to the 76th session of the General Assembly. Our mandate was clear: to create a global practice of peace, founded and inspired by innovation. The report subsequently received 126 co-sponsorships from Member States, a record-breaking level of support never before experienced in the University’s 42-year history.
Since that time, we’ve launched a $5 million campaign to accelerate peace innovation, held various cross-sectoral convenings at the UN, and incubated a global fellowship to explore the intersections of innovation, economic development, and peacebuilding.

THE INITIATIVE
Our Mission
To create and enable a global practice of peace by connecting diverse minds and equipping them with the knowledge and tools to launch peace innovations.
Our VisionÂ
A world where our global systems operate on a framework of sustainable peacebuilding.
Our Pillars

By creating platforms for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership building, we harness the power of collective action, bringing about meaningful change and promoting global perspective to encourage cross-cultural understanding throughout all levels of society.
Collaboration

Through education, peace fellowships, funding, and advocacy, we amplify the voices of revolutionary thinkers and local partners, empowering them to become agents of positive change within their communities and industries.
Empowerment

By collecting data, measuring outcomes, and sharing insights, we seek to inspire a culture of evidence-based decision-making, technological innovation, and accountability across all sectors.
Impact

We learn from failures and differing perspectives, recognizing that traditional approaches to peace-building may not always yield the desired outcomes, and we adjust our strategies, remaining steadfast in our commitment to achieving sustainable peace.

THE UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE
UN and the University for Peace
Our founding partner is the University for Peace. Located in San Jose, Costa Rica, UPEACE is the only higher education institution in the world with Permanent Observer Status at the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General as its Honorary President. As an educational leader, UPEACE is empowering students and global leaders with the education and skills to build peace from the ground up, integrating it into their work and communities.
Through our joint DNA of Peace Fellowship Program, PII and UPEACE are collectively creating the first-ever body of knowledge on peace innovation to support meaningful and sustainable impact for our collective future.
