Women & Girls Powering the DNA of Peace & Prosperity
Every year on March 8th, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, a global moment to recognize the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women and girls everywhere. More than a celebration, it is also a call to action: a reminder that gender equality is essential for peaceful societies and thriving economies.
The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to the early 20th century, when women across Europe and North America began organizing for fair wages, better working conditions, and the right to vote. In 1910, activist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international day dedicated to women’s rights at the International Socialist Women’s Conference. The first official International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911, and decades later the United Nations formally recognized it in 1975. Today, IWD is marked in more than 100 countries, spotlighting progress while acknowledging the work still ahead.
But International Women’s Day is about more than history… it’s about impact. Women and girls play a critical role in shaping what we call the ‘DNA of Peace.’ In communities around the world, women act as bridge-builders, mediators, entrepreneurs, educators, and caregivers. When women participate in peace processes, agreements are more likely to last. When girls have access to education, entire communities experience improved health, stronger institutions, and greater economic resilience.
The economic case is just as powerful. According to global research, advancing gender equality could add trillions of dollars to the global economy. Women-led businesses generate jobs, foster innovation, and strengthen local markets; from small community enterprises to global companies, women entrepreneurs are proving that inclusive economies are stronger and more sustainable. Investing in women and girls is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Education, leadership opportunities, and equitable access to resources enable women to transform families, communities, and nations.
This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the changemakers, the teachers shaping future leaders, the entrepreneurs revitalizing local economies, the activists advocating for justice, and the girls whose dreams will define tomorrow. Because when women rise, peace grows stronger… and the world becomes more prosperous for everyone.
